Management Team (alphabetical order)
Alan Dobson
BA(Hons)Law, ACII, FCILA, FUEDI-ELAE
Alan trained as a Lawyer before joining GAB Robins in 1980 where he obtained in depth knowledge and experience of all aspects of commercial/liability claims at adjuster, manager and Director levels. A key member of the national liability team for planning and implementation of strategic policy, he was responsible for the formation and development of a dedicated environmental claims service, the first in the loss adjusting sector.

Alan is now the Director in charge of QuestGates Environmental Claims Unit which has been established to address both the legal liability and material damage aspects of an environmental incident and to recognise the requirement for proactive claims handling undertaken by trained professionals utilising the necessary skill sets for the tasks required.

Brian Polley
MA (Oxon), FCII, FCILA, FUEDI-ELAE
Joined Thomas Howell Group (now Crawfords) in 1982, specialising from the outset in commercial property and business interruption losses, becoming Midlands Business unit Director and subsequently UK Technical Director in 1993.

Joined McLarens Toplis in 1996 to develop and raise the profile of the company’s major loss capabilities across the Midlands, South West and South Wales regions, heading up a multi disciplinary technical team. Appointed Director with responsibility for national major loss development in 1998.

Following acquisition by Capita Plc., continued major loss role, but also became Relationship Director for major Insurers, including Zurich Financial Services.

In January 2003, became a founding Director of QuestGates Ltd, with specific responsibility for all Property loss adjusting activity:

Adjusting Team (alphabetical order)
Clive Bishop
MRICS
A Chartered Quantity Surveyor, with more than 18 years post qualification experience. Initially worked as a contractor QS on large civil engineer projects, including Thames Barrier.Thereafter, worked as a professional QS for private firms, gaining experience on educational, residential and hospital schemes, as well as bespoke country houses. Worked as a site surveyor on a £20m mixed scheme.

Also Contracts Manager for a system building organisation, dealing with contractual arrangements, new build and maintenance schemes for schools.Commenced loss adjusting career with Toplis & Harding in 1990, gaining extensive subsidence, contractors all risks and commercial loss experience, utilising a range of procurement and construction methodologies.

Joined McLarens Toplis as a Surveyor Adjuster in 1995, becoming the Midlands Major Loss Surveyor in 1997, being involved in many large and complex losses, covering industrial, leisure, and residential buildings. Specialist practical experience in the fields of listed/historic buildings and the associated planning/heritage etc issues.

Joined QuestGates in 2003 as Senior UK Surveyor. Major loss experience includes:

Norman Cobley
BSc(Hons), CEng, MIMechE, MIE
A consultant to QuestGates, Norman Cobley is a hugely experienced Chartered Engineer. Following an initial career in the field of statutory regulation of steam plant, Norman became a marine engineer and gained an honours degree in Engineering Science. Norman then moved into the insurance field, since when he has undertaken worldwide assignments covering the investigation of losses and damage involving a very wide range of plant, including power generation, boilers and pressure vessels, furnaces, turbines, filtration systems, hydroelectric and water treatment plant, fuel handling equipment, electric motors and mining plant.
Martyn Gabbitass
ACII, ACILA
At QuestGates, Martyn supports the Property Major Loss Teams in the areas of lease and contractual interpretation and subrogated recoveries.

Has a wide range of experience in handling major complex losses including:

Fergus Johnstone
ACII, FCILA, FUEDI-ELAE
Commenced Loss Adjusting career with McLarens Toplis in 1975. Extensive Regional Management and commercial loss adjusting experience in the North East, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Particular experience of terrorist compensation claims for both the Northern Ireland Office and Insurance market.

Following the acquisition of McLarens Toplis by Capita Plc., in 2002, opened the Newcastle Office of Ashworth Mairs Group before joining QuestGates in 2003.

Paul is a consultant to QuestGates and has over 15 years professional experience gained working with chartered loss adjusters, forensic accountants and a major global insurer. In addition to specialist knowledge of business continuity, Paul has extensive experience of complex and major loss claims including business interruption, product liability and advance loss of profits across a wide range of industry sectors.
Hugh McLelland

Commenced Loss Adjusting career with McLarens Toplis in 1980, combining Regional Management with technical and major loss adjusting.

Wide experience of managing Corporate Accounts and particular expertise in dealing with large commercial claims in the licensed trade and leisure Industries, both in the United Kingdom and overseas.

A consultant to QuestGates, Heather is a dual qualified chartered accountant and chartered loss adjuster with over 15 years experience specialising in major and/or complex business interruption, credit and other losses with a financial dimension, including losses in the wake of hurricanes and 9/11. She has experience in all areas of forensic accountancy and her work includes multi-million pound business interruption claims, material damage, liability claims and general investigations. Specific experience includes:

Kevin Terry
MCIOB, MASI, MBEng, MaPS, MRICS, ACILA
Kevin joined the loss adjusting profession in 1989 from a construction background and is qualified in multi-disciplines, including Building Surveying, Engineering, H&S Planning Supervisor & Party Wall Surveyor. Kevin’s career includes major loss team involvement (including catastrophe response team), embracing all aspects of building reinstatement with design to satisfy legislation. As a structural engineer, Kevin has specialist knowledge of subsidence and buildings defect related claims.

Paul Thomas

Following a period with an Insurer, joined McLarens Toplis in 1980, managing Plymouth & Bristol branches and subsequently becoming Regional Director with overall responsibility for the South West and South Wales.

Wide experience in all complex and large Property losses, and in 1998, became regional Major Loss Director for McLarens Toplis (and subsequently Capita McLarens). Major loss experience includes:
